<image:title>In Memory Of Donations - Waneta Baum</image:title>
<image:caption>Waneta “Nita” L. Baum, 87, of Cumberland peacefully passed into the arms of her Heavenly Father on April 11, 2021, at home surrounded by her son, friends and four cats. Born in Massachusetts, October 10, 1933, Nita’s life started with many trials, loneliness, and hardships, but she prevailed and grew to be a strong-willed, energetic, adventure-seeking, child of God, mother, sister and friend to many. In high school, Nita was the queen of the prom and an outstanding athlete. She went to girl’s state basketball and received a scholarship for basketball. She won ‘most valuable player’ of the New England AAU playoffs. She played for Foster Grant and earned money to play the game she loved. As a young woman, she met and campaigned for John F. Kennedy, which led to working for Mayor Lynn of Massachusetts. She didn’t like working in an enclosed office environment, so she applied for Northwest Airlines where she was hired as a stewardess and flew for 37 years until she retired. She traveled the world and had many adventures along the way; including flying military over and back to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm and Desert Shield. Life was never boring! She loved traveling and took vacation in many other countries. She loved outdoor adventures wherever she went; kayaking, biking, skiing, camping. She enjoyed many of these adventures after retirement, in addition to getting her motorcycle license and private pilots license! In the early 1970s, in an outstanding action for a single woman, Nita had it in her heart to adopt an 18-month-old baby boy named Brandyn. She raised him as a single parent and was so proud of the determined and responsible adult he became. After retirement, her lake home became her permanent residence. Nita noted that one of her life’s highlights was her role in the start of Kinship in Cumberland. She helped to develop the board and collect donations. She was on the board and head of activities for many years. She gives special credit to Rob Ankarlo, (then Director of Kinship), for his support, along with the many great volunteers and board members over the years, who have made Kinship what it is today. Nita enjoyed the quiet life in Wisconsin and said she would have continued with her adventures, but never thought that adopting two cats from the Human Society would have put a stop to that! Two other cats found their way to her doorstep and into her heart. During this quiet time of her life, Nita turned to the Lord. She was baptized upon joining Northern Lakes Church in 2002 and became involved in church activities and bible studies. Nita is survived by her son, Brandyn of St. Paul, MN, and her older sister, Betty Vowles of Trenton, FL. Nita was also part of a much larger family at Northern Lakes Church who will surely miss her spunk, humor, love and presence, but they celebrate knowing she is now with her Heavenly Father!</image:caption>

<image:title>In Memory Of Donations - Jodi Hanna</image:title>
<image:caption>Jodi Lynn Hanna, 59, of Rice Lake, formerly of Madison, died peacefully with her wife by her side on November 9, 2022, at Mayo Clinic Health System-Northland. She was born October 8, 1963, in Seymour, IN to William “Joe” and Patricia “Pat” (Harness) Hanna. She was legally married to Bonnie Pauline Denny on their 25th anniversary in Iowa on December 5, 2011. Jodi graduated Magna Cum Laude from IU Bloomington with a Masters Degree in Law. She loved to learn and use her skills and knowledge to help those in need. She had a strong sense of justice and that was her driving force. Jodi worked with Disability Rights Wisconsin and advocated for legal equality; she was not afraid to stand up to big corporations to advocate for her clients resulting in life changing settlements. She was especially proud of her work with Voting Rights Accessibility, and working with the Red Cliff band and the Lac Courte Oreilles band of Ojibwe to create accessible domestic violence shelters through the Violence Against Women Act. Jodi had a huge compassionate heart that extended beyond her work. She relished opportunities to use her bilingual skills to help those struggling with a language barrier. Jodi never knew a stranger and engaged in clever conversation with a tish of sarcasm. Her love and ability to interact with animals was something out of a fairy tale. When she was not working on changing the world or communing with wild animals, she could be found reading feminist speculative science fiction. Her joy, smile and laughter will be deeply missed by all who had the great honor to know her. She is survived by her loving wife Bonnie Denny; her parents, Joe and Pat Hanna; sisters: Angie Bishop and Shari Joslin; nieces: Jaclyn, Jillian, and Ady; nephews: Peyton, Alex, Michael, and Mykal; chosen family: Kyrn, Leon, Rita, Aaron, Molly, Ezi, Erica, Roman, Lucia, Kelly, Ocean, Deb, Tara, Tonya, Katie, and Libby; beloved furry children: Dash and Kennedy; and many other dear friends. Jodi was preceded in death by her beloved Great Grandma Carrie. Jodi’s family would like to deeply thank the caring staff of the local ambulance service, Mayo Northland Hospital, especially Dr. Amy Muminovic, and special thanks to the supportive nursing friends who came to the hospital to provide gentle loving care.</image:caption>

<image:title>In Memory Of Donations - Bob Lehman</image:title>
<image:caption>Bob Lehman 67, Grampy to his 13 and under crew, passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully, at his home on Friday, November 18th, 2022. Bob was born April 6th, 1955 to Kenneth and Charlene (Lee) Lehman in Rice Lake, WI. He spent his early days roaming around Noble Avenue and working at Norswiss Farm with his aunt, uncle and cousins. It was in his time working on the farm that he learned about hard work and the many different ways to complete a task. He graduated from RLHS in 1973 and UWEC in 1978. He married Kathy (Erickson) in 1978 and began his career as a claims adjustor, most of which under his own shingle; North Country Adjusting. Along the way he volunteered as a Barron County Deputy Reserve and had the highest level of respect for the Law Enforcement community throughout his life. He pretty much, almost, retired in 2017 but kept himself busy for a few more years driving bus for the Rice Lake School District. Whether by design or happenstance, Bob started coaching, specifically hoops, in the early 80’s and never really stopped. Over the years, he coached at every level from ‘D Bracket’ City League to High School Junior Varsity. He passed this passion (and talent? curse?) to his three kids who can still be found roaming the sidelines throughout northwest Wisconsin. The gym became a second home for him, and his fellow coaches and players became an extended family whose influence was felt far beyond the gym. While he was always ‘somewhat’ into cars (read the sarcasm), in recent years he and Kathy discovered a specific interest in all things Jeep. They enjoyed many drives, top down, around the northwoods to nowhere in particular. Many times these drives included a stop at ‘The Joint’ for some raw potatoes and to chew the fat with Butch and family. Another destination on auto-pilot was the Palace in the Popple for hours of work in the woods, chasing whitetails, and intelligent conversation in the shack. And the grandkids. He loved his grandkids. With the world opening back up, he was quickly becoming a fixture at his grandkids activities once more, a tradition started by his parents back in the 80’s.</image:caption>

<image:title>Adoptable Dogs & Puppies - HOHO</image:title>
<image:caption>Adoption Status: ADOPTABLE Adoption fee: $375 Gender: Female Breed: Shiba Inu/Bulldog Age: 7 months Weight: 18 lbs Dog Friendly: Yes Cat Friendly: Yes, will possibly chase if cat runs. Kid Friendly: Yes House Trained: 100 % History/Origin: Surrendered with littermates Notes from the Foster: Ho Ho is the perfect amount of energy, cuddliness and sweetness. She loves walks (needs continued work on loose leash walking) and likes to visit Agonic Brewing Co. to meet people, but she isn’t going to drive you crazy because you haven’t taken her on a 6 mile hike and done 2 hours of training. She has puppy moments of playfulness and zoomies but then is content to chill out. She likes affection but if you want a lap dog, she’s not the one. Ho Ho loves to follow her nose if she catches a good scent and will hunt rodents and birds, so she needs to be leashed or only loose in a fenced yard. With training she may do okay off leash in the future, but not right now. She’s good at helping her foster mom do horse chores, though she finds the horses a little intimidating. But there’s good smells and tall grass to explore. Ho Ho occasionally will play fetch but other times she’s got her own agenda-she’s a smart girl, but pleasing you might not be high on her list. Ho Ho is housetrained, and crate trained and will be spayed mid-July. She’s really a pretty easy pup to have around and just needs some continued training to help her be her best self.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Adoption Status: ADOPTABLE Adoption fee: $375 Gender: Male Breed: Shiba Inu/Bulldog Age: 7 months Weight: 18 lbs Dog Friendly: Yes, but does best with calm, non-reactive dogs Cat Friendly: Yes Kid Friendly: Yes House Trained: History/Origin: Farm puppy surrendered with littermates Notes from the Foster: Hi there! My name is Ding Dong, and I’m a spunky 7 month old Shiba Inu/Bulldog mix with a personality as unique as my looks. My adorable underbite definitely came from the Bulldog side, while my curly tail is pure Shiba Inu charm. I may be small but I am an independent little man and tend to be pretty stubborn so someone who is willing to put in the time for training and socializing is important. I absolutely LOVE being outside, running, digging holes and have almost mastered fetch . I really enjoy playing with the other dogs at my foster home, but I am a little intimidated by other new dogs. A home with a submissive or non reactive dog would be best for me. I get along with cats and; kids too though!! I LOVE older kids! After I’m done running and playing I am the best little cuddler. I love belly rubs and curling up next to my human on the couch. If you’re looking for a fun companion who will keep you smiling every day, I might just be your perfect match!</image:caption>

However she has a hard timerelaxing on a leash. History/Origin: Breeder Release Notes from the Foster: Pebbles is a gentle soul who is just beginning to discover that people can be kind. Like many breeder-release dogs, she had very little positive human interaction before coming into rescue, so everything is new to her. Each day she gains a little more confidence, choosing to hide less and accept the affection she’s always deserved. She will thrive with a patient, understanding family who will allow her to move at her own pace and celebrate the small victories along the way. Once Pebbles feels safe, her sweet personality begins to shine. Watching her learn to trust is incredibly rewarding, and with time, love, and consistency, she has all the potential to become a wonderful companion</image:caption>

<image:title>Adoptable Dogs & Puppies - EMMITT</image:title>
<image:caption>Adoption Status: ADOPTABLE Adoption fee: $500 Gender: Male Breed: GSD Age: 6-months Weight: Dog Friendly: Cat Friendly: Kid Friendly: House Trained: % History/Origin: Notes from the Foster: Looking for a fun, smart, and loyal adventure buddy? If so, then look no further! Emmitt is an active and handsome (we might add) 6-month old German Shepherd puppy who is ready to find his furever family! Emmitt is currently being fostered by one of our areas highly respected professional dog trainers, so he/s learning from the best! Here’s what she has to say: “He is social, sweet and spunky! He has been here to work on manners, training and potty training. He will need a home that is active and willing to continue working with him. Getting an adorable (foster) puppy is a lot of fun, but also a lot of work! Here are some things that I have been working on with Emmitt when introducing him to my home and preparing him to go to his next home: Crate training. He goes in a crate when I am gone, over night or when I am not keeping an eye on him or able to support him. When I leave the house for a short period of time, when I come in the house, I will have him stay in the crate for a little bit before getting him out. This helps him stay calm when I am coming and going. I want him calm and happy in the crate whether I am in the house or gone. Potty training. When he isn’t supervised, he is in the crate. When he is out, I am watching him or have him leashed to me. I am taking him out very frequently to go potty. When he first gets out of his crate and goes potty, sometimes I will bring him back out five to ten minutes later. I watch him like a hawk. In the yard sometimes I will stop him from playing if he hasn’t gone potty yet. This is something I want to take care of as I don’t want it to linger for a while. Understanding verbal markers and the back off cue. This is important so when he is doing something I like, I can mark and reward (praise, affection, sometimes a treat). I can also mark to let him know when he’s doing something I don’t like. Back off is working on him moving away from something...like the cat, another dog that doesn’t want to play, etc. Sit on the Dog, Tethering. Having him on leash in the house with me whether I am sitting and hanging out or if I am moving about has worked on leash skills, how to share space and what the rules of the house are, being able to chill/emotional regulation, etc. Even having a leash dragging inside can be helpful. Doorway manners. When the door opens you wait to be released out. Sometimes I’ll ask for a sit, sometimes I’ll wait for him to give me eye contact, but the bare minimum is to wait to be released. Sometimes I release my dogs as a group and other times I release them one at a time. Having him learn to wait his turn is important. Feeding time. Right now he is crated while I feed everyone and then he gets his meal in his crate. I need him to be quiet while I am prepping everyone’s meals. Hand feeding is something I have implemented a little, but need to do more of. Socialization with other people and other animals. I have taken him to his vet appointment, but also need to take him into town and other environments. He is also working on seeing other dogs that he isn’t going to interact with and staying calm. Basic Manners. I work on teaching him how to initiate affection. Instead of crawling onto me, leaning into me, shoving other dogs out of the way for attention, I work on making sure he is being appropriate. If he isn’t, he doesn’t get attention and may be sent away. He is learning that other dogs can get attention without him shoving in or trying to get them to play. He’s also learning not to shove past me in tight spaces, how to move out of my way when I am walking, doorways, taking treats, etc. General obedience training. He has worked on loose leash walking, name recognition (recall), some place bed and sit and down. Other things like taking the treat nicely, engagement, patience, etc. have all been a part of that.</image:caption>

<image:title>Adoptable Dogs & Puppies - GUS</image:title>
<image:caption>Adoption Status: ADOPTABLE Adoption fee: $ 375 Gender: Male (intact) Breed: Bernese Mountain Dog Age: 7 months Weight: 65lbs Dog Friendly: Yes Cat Friendly: Interested… Kid Friendly: Very! May knock down little ones as he is still very uncoordinated and in his “jumpy” toddler years. House Trained: 90% Never had an accident in his kennel. Will pee once in a while if loose in the house and I’m not paying attention. If tethered to me or kenneled he is always good. History/Origin: Adopted from LRBDR as a 2 month old puppy. Owners relinquished him at 6 months because he was “too much” for them. Kenneled alone for much of that time. When he came to us he had no toenails as he had ground them down on the concrete pad he was kenneled on. Notes from the Foster: He’s a lover! Beautiful dog. Eager to please. Needs direction and someone willing to work on manners with him. Responds well, but is still a puppy, so need to be mindful that although he looks like an adult dog, he is still learning and just a toddler. Loves to lay in the shade on the grass and chew on a stick. Even though he’s already a BIG dog, Gus is still very much a puppy. That means he loves to chew, jump, play, and explore the world with enthusiasm. You’ll want to keep your shoes, phone chargers, books, and anything else you value out of reach. Thankfully, he’s easily redirected with toys and enjoys having something appropriate to keep him busy. Gus and his littermates were adopted from our rescue when they were just 2-months old. Unfortunately, after his adoption he had very little exposure to other dogs. Because of that, he gets VERY excited to meet new people and dogs and can be a bit over-the-top with his greetings. The good news? He responds well to calm, consistent correction and is eager to learn—he just needs someone committed to continuing his training. With younger dogs, Gus would happily wrestle all day long. Around older, confident dogs, however, he quickly understands the pecking order and settles nicely after being corrected. He’s a sweetheart with a heart of gold. While he’s not a Velcro cuddler, he loves being near his people, enjoys affection, and absolutely melts for belly rubs. A few more things about Gus: Kennels quietly overnight and whenever unsupervised. Potty trained, although—as with any puppy—he still needs regular potty breaks. Walks nicely with a prong collar but will pull on a standard leash. Rarely barks unless the other dogs get him started. Has a strong prey drive for rabbits and birds, so he’ll need to stay leashed or in a securely fenced area. He’s curious about cats but has shown appropriate respect. In fact, when our cat Mo hissed and gave him a stern warning, Gus thought it over, picked up his leash, and decided he’d find someone else to play with instead. Smart boy! He doesn’t seem easily startled. We walked during fireworks, and the noise didn’t bother him at all. The biggest thing Gus needs to work on is recall. If you call “come,” he currently hears, “Let’s play chase!” He does know sit and down, and he’s proving to be a quick learner. Gus is looking for an active family that understands large-breed puppies and is willing to continue his training. He’ll thrive with someone strong enough to handle a growing 65-pound puppy and committed to helping him become the amazing adult dog we know he can be. If you’re looking for a goofy, affectionate, fun-loving adventure buddy, Gus just might be your perfect match.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Adoption Status: Available Adoption fee: $500 Gender: Female Breed: Cavapoo Age: 10.5 weeks Weight: 4 pounds Dog Friendly: Great! Cat Friendly: Good! She chases the cat in our house, but in a playful manner. She backs off immediately when the cat bats her. Kid Friendly: Great! House Trained: 65% - She pees almost every time she is put outside. We have very few pee accidents in the house. We are still working on poo. But she’s truly off to a great start. History/Origin: Raised in a puppy mill and then rejected by the pet store that buys from them. She has been diagnosed with a Grade 4 heart murmur. (Out of 6, with 1 being of little concern, and 6 being of great concern). Stage 4 could go in either direction - it may never affect her. Or…it could get worse. Notes from the Foster: She is a bundle of energy! She plays hard, but then sleeps hard. She will need a family who welcomes the excitement of a Cavapoo pup! She desperately wants to be with her people. Both when awake, playing and while sleeping. She still likes to nibble and chew on things, but is easily redirected to rawhide or chew toys. She truly loves everyone she meets - people and animals.</image:caption>
